Pranav,

Thanks for your feedback. I don't have the exact data you are looking for...just a few anecdotal facts.

I will contact you to discuss further.

Hi Amit,

that's a wonderful writeup. I am a journalist with the Indian Express in Pune and picked up one sentence from your story which could be developed into a different story altogether. You've said that Pune is experiencing reverse brain drain, Is there any way I can get in touch with you about this? Also, do you know of any agency that can support us with a data that- these many people, or XY percentage of people returned to India post the US slowdown? My number is 9923695137, . Waiting for a reply from your side.

Thanks

San - Thanks for your feedback. Agree with you - having a good local market for new technology based applications and services is important.

Well written article!

IMO it will not be wrong statement if we say that Pune has become hub of "technology" start ups. Banglore and other cities might have services based companies but Pune has more pure technology based start ups than any other city in India. (just my observation)

I think the only thing missing is market or adapting new ideas by users. People in silicon valley do not hesitate to try out something different (even by paying some amount) but in India, companies, users still go with "brand name"

I am involved in studying Indian market for social networking and developing business around it but it is very frustrating to see how people react to any new products especially of Indian origin.

There is a new interesting trend to incorporate company in US and start offshore development center in Pune even for local Indian market just to show that same company has US present (and potential US market)
and I should say it is working in most of the cases.

Thanks

In short I think you missed one important point i.e. "market".

Aniket - Thanks for your comments. I agree that education needs to be improved, and that only a small percentage of technical graduates can be truely considered 'world-class'.

Santosh - In the IT space (products/services), I can think of: Persistent, KPIT Cummins, Tech Mahindra(Pune HQ?), Zensar.

Is this what you were looking for?

Vikram - Thanks for your feedback.

Pune certainly has a strong educational culture in India, but it's still way behind international education standards. Here's an excerpt from an article published in India Today:

... by the most charitable ranking of the Times Higher Education Supplement, our IITs rank 50th in the world, the IIMs 84th, and the much talked-about Jawaharlal Nehru University a lowly 192nd.

Education should be improved I guess. It should be on a par with institutes like Stanford and MIT. The first thing towards this goal would be using good textbooks--for example, textbook by Tanenbaum, rather than a local bestseller Vision Publication or Techmax. The latter choice is in fact a concise and watered-down version of the earlier one.
