		<description>Parag,

I don&#039;t think there is any easy solution! Moreover, I don&#039;t think any one single strategy would work here.

I don&#039;t have a complete answer, but think a combination of measures need to be taken. Hence I stressed the hiring aspects upfront. Recruiting the &#039;right&#039; managers who think of themselves as &#039;intra-preneurs&#039; is critical. Obviously, their incentive systems and career growth options have to be mapped appropriately.

Would be interesting to see what other readers think.

Thanks

		<description>Abhay,

Thanks for your inputs. I agree - space leasing and markdowns are important pieces. Will try to cover them in a future article.

<description>Nice article Amit, you sum it up all very well for both basic and advanced readers. There are few topics I would like to add for the next series

1. Space Leasing - Stores like Walmart proclaim that they are no longer in the space of selling &#039;merchandise&#039; but more of leasing &#039;space&#039;. For example, for bigger suppliers like Pepsi/Coke, Walmart bids for space in stores and gives them out like a lease and the entire inventory and replenishment is handled by Supplier. They can also do their own in store promotions, sample give aways, decorate the isles (e.g. during Superbowl) etc. This concept is gathering more and more traction in US.

2. Markdown Optimization - In retail, quite substantial portion of inventory is sold below marked price and optimizing it to sell is key. e.g. typical retailers will start marking down Christmas merchandise upto 25% 2 weeks before Christmas (since most folks wont wait that long to buy), 50% right after Christmas and 75 to 90% in subsequent weeks

Will add more as time permits :)
