Career Guidance Workshop by CSI PUne

Career Guidance Workshop 2008

Following last years hugely successful career guidance workshop, the Computer Society of India, Pune Chapter is organizing yet another program to help young professionals (freshers) and students.
Looking at the current trend, students and freshers are always looking for brighter opportunities and want to do something “different”. To help such students and freshers, we have organized a Career Guidance Workshop, where experienced industry leaders will talk about different domains, and opportunities in those domains. Whether you want to learn something new, or are seriously looking for a job, this workshop will definitely help you. There are two parts of this workshop. One, which talks about alternate and upcoming technologies, and the second, which talks about IT in the non-IT fields. Students and freshers usually have a limited view of the scope and trends in the industry. Through this workshop, we want to help students gain a better understanding of various domains, and provide them some direction, which might eventually help them choose a bright career.

Here is an outline of the program.

Pune significantly trails other cities in number of developers?

Bhavin Turakhia of Directi believes that the biggest challenge facing a small startup in India today is the avaiability of talent. To get a feel for which city has the best pool of developers, he and his team did some keyword searches on top job sites and have published their findings on Bhavin’s blog. The results are interesting – while I am not surprised that Bangalore is head and shoulders ahead of Pune, I was surprised that Hyderabad, NCR and even Chennai are significantly ahead of Pune:

  • Bangalore has 2.5 times the number of Java resumes of Mumbai
  • In terms of total resumes from each city the ranking is in the following order – Bangalore, Hyderabad, NCR, Chennai, Delhi, Pune, and lastly Mumbai
  • As an example, here is the citywise count of Resumes that contained the keyword Java
    • Bangalore – 123,205
    • Hyderabad- 114,561
    • NCR – 85,347
    • Chennai – 82459
    • Pune – 54,086
    • Delhi – 53,256
    • Mumbai – 43,672

MyJobsInPune.com launched last September and is already considered a major success.

MyJobsInPune is owned by Irish company SaonGroup which chose Pune as the location for its maiden venture into India because:

Pune is a fascinating city with great economic potential. It has attracted numerous Fortune 500 enterprises as well as many top-tier professionals who aspire to develop their careers in Pune. It is for these reasons that Pune was selected as the first city for Saongroup to launch in and we plan to invest up to €10m in the initial phase of expansion across India from our HQ in Pune. We strongly believe that India presents a huge opportunity for sustained growth in different sectors and a rapid growth in online recruitment.

I just checked out MyJobsInPune’s home page and noticed that everyone from B.U. Bhandari Auto, to Goel Ganga Group have put up ads there. So it seems to have managed to rope in a quite eclectic mix of customers. On the other hand, I did not find ads from major software companies like Symantec, or Persistent, or even Infosys listed.

In any case, it is heartening to note that there are 1000s of web-savvy employers in Pune.
