TiE Pune My Story session with Mohit Dubey CEO/Founder of CarWale – 3 June

TiE Pune presents a “My Story” session with Mohit Dubey, CEO and Founder of CarWale on 3 June, 6pm to 8pm, at MCCIA Trade Towers, Pune. Carwale is one of the few dotcom and “ecommerce” success stories by and Indian company for Indian customers – and hence should be a must for anyone in India interested in web technologies.

CarWale is a platform where car buyers and owners can research, buy, sell and come together to discuss and talk about their cars. CarWale was founded in 2005, and by 2010 it had become India’s single largest source of car sales.

After completion of his MBA and spending the first three years of his career in a start-up, Mohit took the entrepreneurial plunge with an initiative aimed at building the concept of telemedicine in remote villages. Post that, he ventured into delivering customized software. In 2005, while creating software for a car dealership, Mohit saw the frictions in car buying and founded CarWale.com.

Today, CarWale is South Asia’s leading car portal and acknowledged as the market leader in its space. Backed by India’s leading early stage venture capital firm Seedfund and top tier US venture fund Sierra Ventures, and with over 2.4 million visits a month, the portal is way ahead of its nearest rival launched by Times of India. It has influenced approximately $3 billion of car transactions in India and has won many prestigious awards including the Red Herring Asia Top 100, BusinessWeek’s Top 25 young entrepreneurs in Asia and PCWorld Web Award for best automotive website.

Carwale.com offers a complete consumer-focused service that includes content and tools for exhaustive research, pricing and marketplace information. As consumers research and make purchase decisions, the portal connects them with automotive manufacturers, finance and insurance companies, allowing them to make the best decisions for their automotive purchases. CarWale also offers more than 400,000 pages of car research, tips-advices, road-tests etc.

It has also what could be India’s first used car and new car price guide. It provides the on-road price of almost all cars being sold in 300+ Indian cities. It also serves 8,000 used car value checks every day. The ‘Recommend Me A Car’ feature is used by more than one thousand new car buyers every day. From 500 used car listings in Oct’ 05, the portal today has around 15,000 listings. CarWale offers more than 400,000 pages of car research, tips-advices, road-tests etc.

About Lila Poonawala

As the country’s first female CEO of a Multinational, Lila Poonawalla didn’t just break the glass ceiling, but trailed several new, unchartered paths to take her company, Alfa Laval to success. Lila’s tenure at Alfa Laval was marked by progress on all the business fronts – production, marketing and expansion. But her focus on the areas of industrial relations, employees’ welfare and customer service were what made the difference.

Apart from winning international awards, she procured global recognition for the company by showing progress in exports to Russia, Germany, USA, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Turkey, and many others. Internally she was the architect of a unique labor agreement that was a five-year agreement, the first of its kind in industrial world. Breaking the barriers of protocol was her forte and she utilized this modus operandi to the maximum – in forging better ties with customers, employees and their families and the parent company as well.

She was able to motivate the workers to better their performance and participate in the company as a family. Some of the many social activities she took up were Family Circles and welfare schemes like the Parivar (Family) Development Center and scholarships for employees’ children, in-house magazines, sports club for workers; as well as the concept of work improvement teams and quality circles, which were introduced not only to improve performance but also relations.

Her efforts towards social welfare have already made her the driving spirit behind the Lila Poonawalla Foundation, which is her private initiative and not a CSR activity and the Quality Circle Forum of India, to further the cause of education among women and contribute to People development. She has won several awards, among the many being The Lady of the Decade (1978-1988) the President’s Best Lady Executive, and above all being awarded Padmashree by the President of India way back in 1989 and an International recognition from the King of Sweden, honoring her with a Polar Star and naming her as the OFFICER of the Royal Order in 2003.But resting on her laurels is impossible. Lila, who is open to new challenges is on the boards of IDBI Bank, IDBI Intech, KPIT Cummins Infosystems, NobleTek PLM Solutions, Blossom Breweries to name a few and plays the role of Corporate Advisor, Mentor to many companies.

TiE Pune Event: How Pune’s Businesses can Sieze Global Opportunities

TiE Pune presents a Panel Discussion with Ravi Pandit (CEO, KPIT), Pramod Chaudhari (Founder & Chairman, Praj), Pradeep Chordia (MD Chordia Foods Products Ltd), Partner, Ernst & Young (confirmation awaited). On Saturday, November 20, 2010, At Cerebrum B3, Kalyani Nagar (behind AdLabs)

A few years back it would have been impossible to imagine that auto parts for the world would be manufactured in our backyard, that the city would have the highest number of IT companies servicing the world or that Pune grown companies would buy international giants across the world. But that has happened.

As we get more and more connected, as our factories churn out more, the earth gasps, development zooms at a dizzying space, and as the economy throws up newer challenges, we need to pause and think. In what direction will the global demand move, what products, services will be in demand and what processes will we have to develop to cater to those newer needs. If the West makes outsourcing prohibitive, if our input costs eat away into our competitive pricing, if newer needs outpace our innovation and require our imagination to be more active, can Pune keep pace with such demands?

What are our strengths that we can leverage to seize new opportunities that the world throws up, what is it that Pune’s ecosystem lacks and how do we overcome it? What should your company do to be able to meet such global demands? Can Pune’s entrepreneurs grasp and hold the new world of the future?

Come and listen to Pune’s business icons, leaders and legends share their view of the world in the near future and how Pune can seize such opportunities in the following industries:

IT industry: Ravi Pandit, CEO KPIT Cummins
Clean Technologies: Pramod Chaudhary Chairman and founder, (Praj Industries)
Food and Agriculture: Pradeep Chordia, MD, Chordia Food Products
Economic Overview: Partner, Ernst & Young (confirmation awaited)

TiE Pune Seminar: To sell or not to sell – 24th Feb

TiE LogoWhat: TiE Pune Seminar on whether or not to sell your company, by Girish Godbole, CEO and Founder, CEO ally, Inc.
When: 24th Feb, 6pm
Where: Renu Electronics, Baner Road (Near Lexus Furniture)
Registration and Fees: Free for TiE Members, Rs. 250 for others, mail namita.shibad [at] gmail [dot] com to register.

Details:
To most of us, our companies are our own, forever. We never think of selling them. Why should we sell our own creations? What good can come out of it? But in the West companies are sold off on a regular basis. There must be some benefit from that? Given that we are in the midst of a challenging global recession that most of us will witness only once in our lifetime, does selling out make sense? The events that will unfold in the next few quarters will result in the widespread destruction of value – for companies, investors, management and employees, and will span industry verticals, geographies and sectors.

So would this be the right time to sell your company? How can you best position your company for a potential acquisition? Should you get a strategic investment into your company? Why is mid-market M&A still active? How can you best prepare your company for a strategic exit? The seminar will address these questions and walk you through all steps of a typical M&A deal from the point of view of a small to mid-sized technology company.

This workshop will be by Girish Godbole, Founder and CEO of CEO ally, Inc. (www.ceoally.com), a boutique M&A and business advisory firm based in the U.S. Girish brings hands-on experience as a serial entrepreneur and executive who has built, operated and sold businesses successfully.

The workshop will address the following questions in detail:

  1. Should you sell your company? Why? When?
  2. Why do buyers buy?
  3. How can you best position your company to sell?
  4. What do buyers read into financials?
  5. What is a fair valuation?
  6. How does this all work? Can you do it alone?
  7. How will an acquisition affect your work life?

This seminar is free for TiE members. Non members will be charged Rs250/- payable by cash or cheque at the venue. The event will be held on Tuesday, Feb 24, 2009, 6.00pm, at Renu Electronics, Survey no 2/6 Baner Road, (lane next to Lexus Furniture. It is 250 metres after Hotel Mahabaleshwar going towards Mumbai) Pune 411045. Kindly email Namita at namita.shibad[at]gmail[dot]com to confirm your attendance.
