Historically, Pune has been famous for Education and Cultural activities. It is also one of the major industrial centers in India. One of the pioneering IT cities in India, Pune is the first place in Asia, where automated data processing using Punched Cards was started in 1949 for processing Secondary examinations results. India's first super computer, Param, was concieved and built in Pune under the aegis of the Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). Pune now has a throbbing and ever-growing IT presence with exports from Pune-based software and ITES companies poised on the brink of US$ two billion a year!

The Pune Chapter of the Computer Society of India was established in March 1973. Since then it has been one of the most active chapters in the country by virtue of its numerous activities and contributions in various fields. The membership of the chapter has now crossed 800. It won the Best Chapter Award in 1993-94 & in 1997-98 for Westerns region and 2000-2001 for National level. It has helped the people in implementing computerized systems in various sectors such as Industry, Banking commercial, Public sector Research and Development establishments and Government departments. With several programs and a strong IT professional network, the Pune chapter has been a part of the growth of Pune's IT industry.

Working at the grass-root level, the chapter has also contributed toward stronger computer education is various ways. The student chapters in Pune, established at several leading colleges are the means to ensure quality experience sharing and industry expertise can reach students.

[edit] About Computer Society of India

Computer Society of India is the largest association of IT professionals in India. Started in the year 1965 with less than 50 like minded professionals as a computer user group. It has grown to a size of 18000 members in a span of about three decades.

The purposes of the society are scientific and educational directed towards the advancement of the theory and practice of computer science, computer engineering and technology, systems science and engineering, information processing and related arts and sciences. It shall endeavour to:

  • Promote interchange of information, in these disciplines and sub-disciplines, amongst the specialists and between specialists and the public.
  • Encourage and assist the professionals engaged in these fields to maintain the integrity and competence of the profession; and
  • Foster a sense of partnership amongst the professionals engaged in these fields.

Means to these ends are holding of meetings for the reading and discussing of professional papers, the publications and circulation of works of literature, science and art pertaining thereto and any other activities necessary; suitable and proper for the fulfillment of these objectives.

The primary aim of CSI has been to share the knowledge and experience amongst the IT professionals. With rapid proliferation of computes at various levels of the society, the need for knowledge and experience sharing has been diversified during last two decades.
