Presenting a talk by Eric Klincker, CEO of BitTorrent Inc, on Monday, 28th December, 4pm, at MCCIA, SB Road.

Whenever a distinguished technology leader visits Pune, we like to arrange a talk for the benefit of the tech community in Pune. For example a few months earlier, we had Vincent Hsu, CTO for Storage and SDE at IBM, and Mark Re, CTO of Seagate. Often, these talks have to be arranged at the last minute, with less than a week’s notice, and the date/times are constrained by the visitors’ schedule, but in spite of that, the community steps up and we end up having a great event.

This time, GSLab brings to us, Eric Klinker the CEO of a company and technology that truly changed the world – BitTorrent. The event will be on Monday, December 28th, at ICC Trade Center, SB Road. The schedule is as follows:

Who has not heard of BitTorrent today? Come and listen to the philosophy behind this landmark company from none other than the CEO, Eric Klinker. He would like to talk about the Internet becoming increasingly centralized, straining the operating principles of openness and neutrality that have led to its phenomenal growth. But what if more of the web worked the way BitTorrent does? Eric will discuss a platform that powers a new way for web content to be published, accessed and consumed. Truly an Internet powered by people, one that lowers barriers and points towards a brighter future.

About the Speaker – Eric Klinker

Here’s what Eric’s Wikipedia Page describes him:

Eric Klinker is an American technology executive and is best known as the CEO of BitTorrent. Along with Bram Cohen and three other venture capitalists, he is also on the board of governors of BitTorrent. He was instrumental in formulating BitTorrent’s position on network neutrality, testifying before the FCC as well as other worldwide telecom regulators.

As CEO, he is credited with guiding BitTorrent through the 2008 financial crisis and growing the user base to over 170m users. In 2012, BitTorrent expanded its mission under Klinker and broadened the product portfolio, introducing additional distributed applications like BitTorrent Sync, BitTorrent Bundles, Bleep, and BitTorrent Live, a linear broadcasting P2P protocol also invented by Bram Cohen. In 2014, BitTorrent announced Project Maelstrom, a distributed web browser designed to power a new way for web content to be published, accessed and consumed.

PuneConnect, Pune’s startup show case event, is now in it’s 5th year, and is one of Pune’s most important events for startups. This is an event for startups to showcase their products and services to larger companies in Pune, VCs and angel investors from all over the country, and others from the ecosystem. PuneConnect 2015 is on 28th November 2015. It is a half-day event where selected startups in Pune can find customers, mentors, business partners, affiliates, and investors amongst Pune’s established companies, successful senior entrepreneurs, and angels and investors from all over.

This event is free for startups selected by PuneConnect. If you are unsure of whether this event is appropriate for you or not, please go ahead and apply, and our selection committee will figure out whether you’re a good fit or not. Please apply right away. The last date to apply is 8th November – end of this week.

Any startup company from Pune or nearby areas, who has a product that they would like to demo, should submit a proposal at http://db.PuneConnect.com. A panel of selectors drawn from experts in the industry will select the most promising startups who will be allowed to set up a demo at PuneConnect on 28th November 2015

Event: “How to think like an MIT Media Lab Inventor” by Dr. Raskar of Media Lab – 10 July

Prof Ramesh Raskar, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and head of the Camera Culture research group at MIT Media Lab, will give a talk on “How to think like an MIT Media Lab Inventor” at COEP, on 10 July (tomorrow) from 11am to 12noon. (Note: the talk has been kept early to ensure that you will not get stuck in Palkhi traffic restrictions. There is parking at the venue)

Normally, I am not a fan of talk on “innovation”. But in this case, I would make an exception. Ramesh Raskar, has been involved in a number of innovations that are, to me, mindblowing. Like, the camera that can see around corners, visualizing individual photons in motion by recording video at a trillion frames per second, and much other such research. But, in addition to such high tech work, he is also looking at the bottom of the pyramid. For example, EyeNetra is a cheap (less than Rs. 100) accessory that anyone can snap on to an Android smartphone and use for detecting cataracts and other vision problems in places like rural India.

Most recently, he has started an initiative to bring innovation to solve real world urbanization problems in smaller towns in developing countries. This is Kumbhathon, which has been running in Nashik for the last few years.

Raskar is an alumnus of College of Engineering Pune.

The topic of this talk is to discuss Prof Raskar’s idea hexagon to let you build your own innovations the Media Lab way. Having been an inventor of 50 plus patents and author of numerous international publications, Prof Raskar proposes an idea hexagon that allows anyone to build game changing innovations.

Barcamp Pune is Back: 27 Sept #BCP8

What is a BarCamp

A BarCamp is an unconference. Basically, it is a crowd-sourced conference; which means that the date, time and theme of the conference are announced but the actual talks and speakers are not decided until the day of the conference itself. On the morning of the conference, a whiteboard is put up with the rooms and speaking slots, and anyone who feels like talking on any topic (that is in line with the theme of the conference) can add their topic and name to any of the open slots.

And then people are encouraged to go to any talk they find interesting, and use the “Law of Two Feet” – i.e. if a talk is not interesting, walk out, and go to the next talk, or start your own informal talk in the corridors.

What this really does is that you get a much more dynamic and diverse conference. The speakers and topics are not the same old ghisa-pita stuff – You discover new topics and new speakers and make new friends. You find enthusiastic and genuinely interested people – not corporate types who attend because their company requires them to attend.

More about Barcamp Pune

BarCamp is happening in Pune after a gap of about 6 years and we are expecting that this time around BarCamp Pune 8 will be more focused on early-stage web and mobile apps. However, the BarCamp is open for a variety of other topics, including healthcare, education, banking, real estate, Social Media, lifestyle, Auto, Aeroplanes, environment, Police, Anti-terrorism, Songs, Movies, Books, etc. Practically anything and everything under the sun (and even beyond) can be discussed in BarCamp.

What Should you expect?

Apart from networking and meeting people from various walks of life in different sectors, a BarCamp is probably the only place where ideas evolve during the course of the event. Nothing is planned in a BarCamp – Every participant has right to talk on the subject they love (and think that others may also like). While this format can be chaotic sometimes, it also opens doors to something you may never have known or been exposed to in an event.

And yes, BMC Software, the place where we are hosting the event have sponsored us with Free Lunch and beverages.

TechMarathi.com is a sister site of PuneTech – a site that focuses on publishing technology articles in Marathi for the benefit of people who are not yet entirely comfortable in English, but would still like to stay abreast of the latest in technology.

This year, in the time-honoured tradition of Marathi periodicals, TechMarathi is planning a “Diwali Ank” – a Diwali Special “bumper” edition of articles.

If you are a techie who can write in Marathi, please consider contributing an article. You can even translate an existing English article to Marathi – even that can be quite valueable.

Reliable and Scalable Data Streaming in Multi-Hop Architecture – Sudhir Sangra

The changes in technologies, customer requirements, and visualization and consumption of data demands has led multiple point products to integrate and evolve into a solution. The value of the solution is in the seamless flow of information through multiple product layers and consuming this information in real time. Many times, if the “time to consume” the data to build information is not within the agreed service levels, the data loses its value. Thus, timeliness and reliability are the two most important aspects of multi-layered application integration.

In the IT Management domain, the data collection and the system analytics engines need to go hand-in-hand. The data collectors should feed the analytics serves in real-time, to enable it to build intelligent analysis and to do various sorts of data modelling to help IT Managers have the holistic view of the underlying system resources and let them perform a root cause analysis of any problem proactively. The more granular, and consistent data, the more accurate will be the analytics and capacity estimates.

OpenStack is open-source software which is used for building public or private clouds. Competitors include VMware, vCloud and Amazon Web Services (News – Alert), so steps need to be taken to make OpenStack as popular as possible in the competitive marketplace.

OpenStack has become increasingly important to enterprises of all sizes as its reach extends beyond Web 2.0/SaaS companies, such as Workday, Webex and PayPal. OpenStack is now a major element of both enterprise cloud computing and broader cloud initiatives.

Customers also need to know how well OpenStack performs, but OpenStack is complex with many subsystems and components, which makes it hard for customers or potential customers to predict how “different implementation decisions and changes proposed to OpenStack affect the whole system’s behavior and performance,” according to a statement from Mirantis. On top of this, there are many alternative cloud configurations where OpenStack can be installed and used. Benchmarking becomes very difficult because it’s hard to get results from just parts of OpenStack. What was needed is a way to find benchmarking on the entire OpenStack system, with a predefined cloud configuration, the company explained. The benchmarking tool would also need to come up with complex and reproducible scenarios on actual OpenStack deployments.

In other words, customers basically need to monitor how well of a job OpenStack is doing. So IBM, SoftLayer (News – Alert) (part of IBM) and Mirantis have developed Rally. It’s a benchmarking tool that reports on OpenStack performance.

In this session, we describe the details behind the process, talk about the Rally – Performance benchmarking tool , performance assessment strategies we used. We’ll also share our findings on key scalability and performance bottlenecks, validations approaches, and suggest solutions.Performance benchmarking of Openstack component – nova.

Scala University: A free continuous learning initiative for the Scala Programming Language by ThoughtWorks Pune

Scala University is an initiative of Scala practitioners from Pune – who want to drive continuous learning/teaching of Scala in the form of free public workshops. It was started by developers at ThoughtWorks who are passionate Scala users for many years. As of now, Scala University is specifically interested in helping communities in and around cities where ThoughtWorks has offices.

How did it start?

The people who started Scala University felt that they have benefitted a great deal from the open source Scala Language, the wonderful Scala community, and from other free and open resources around the web, for example, like Coursera courses on Scala and Reactive programming. They felt that they should give back to the community, and that is why “Scala University”

As a first step, they conducted a 4-day Scala Workshop in Pune on 20-23 June 2014. The event was “free” for all those who could clear a coding test. The response was overwhelming:

  • It got 350 registrations
  • 95 of them submitted the coding assignments
  • 30 candidates were selected after code review
  • 29 of them confirmed and attended all 4 days of the training!
  • Along with them, 10 ThoughtWorkers also attended, taking the total batch size to 40
  • Apart from developers there were 5 Quality Analysts and 1 Project Manager
  • The experience level varied widely: from 1st year engineering grads to people with 12+ years of experience.

The workshop also generated huge amount of goodwill in the local community. Enthused with the success, they conducted the 2nd workshop in Gurgaon on 24-27 July. The numbers were similar (around 25 people including 6 ThoughtWorkers attended). The 3rd workshop is scheduled in Chennai on 4-7 Sep. Workshops in Hyderabad, Singapore and Bangalore are being considered. You can keep track of list of all events conducted so far.

How does it work?

The Scala deep-dive workshop currently covers language fundamentals with hands on assignments. The workshop is always planned around the weekend. So, each attendee (which include ThoughtWorkers) have to invest 2 working days, plus a full weekend for the workshop. People have suggested compressing the workshop to 3 days, but it needs at least 4 full days to give a complete perspective of the basic language.

Folks from local ThoughtWorks offices are critical for organizing and logistics. They also help with the code reviews. Reviewing so many code submission is the most difficult task.

The workshop is announced around 1 month in advance. Roughly 25% of those who register submit the code, and 30% of those who submit the code qualify for the workshop. The course turns out to be ‘intense and fun’ for smart developers.

What are the rewards?

Learning and teaching Scala is a joy which in itself is a big reward. But there are other good side effects of this initiative:

  • Building local community around Scala
  • Building internal Scala capability within ThoughWorks
  • Positively influencing hiring. Some attendees from the 1st workshop applied to ThoughtWorks, and ThoughtWorks ended up making 2 offers!
  • Companies in the local markets find out about the workshop with requests for doing a dedicated commercial training.
  • The workshop model has inspired similar trainings by other ThoughtWorkers. See Agile Dev Bootcamp w- hich is scheduled on 15-August.

Next steps

Scala University also wants to do this in other cities where ThoughtWorks has offices, and they want to do multiple batches at each location if there is enough interest. If you are are a ThoughtWorker interested in doing a batch of “Scala University” in your city, please get in touch. If you are a potential attendee, please let them know in which cities you would like to attend these workshops. Based on that data, they might also plan a workshop in cities where ThoughtWorks does not have a office (for example, Mumbai or Nagpur).

Many have requested workshops on advanced/focused topics. The following topics are being considered:

  • Reactive programming (futures, promises, streams and actors)
  • Tools (Sbt, Play, Akka)
  • Big data computing (Spark stack)
