Pune’s @EZMove_in raises Rs 1 crore in angel funding from HNIs

The Economic Times is reporting that Pune-based EZMove has raised Rs 1 crore in angel funding from HNIs.

Excerpts from the article:

Online home relocation service aggregator EZMove raised angel investment of Rs 1 crore from seven high networth individuals, including industrialist Hemant Bharatram, and Chicago-based Purvi Capital cofounder Ravi Srivastava, who have all invested in their personal capacity.

Founded in August last year, EZMove is an online marketplace where a user can meet a reliable packer by simply filling out an online form. The customer also receives ratings of each of these vendors based on old customer experience and also feedback based on the startup’s screening process. At a minimum, the customer gets quotations from 3-4 packers.

How are they planning on using the money?

“We will aggressively expand to smaller towns and cities, and invest on our mobile website,” said Anand Agarwal, 36, who cofounded the company with Vishwajeet Singh, who he met while working at Geometric Software. EZMove expects a revenue of Rs 12 crore by December 2014 at current run rate. The movers and packers market in India is estimated to be about Rs 10,000 crore with mostly unorganized players.

The founders Anand and Vishwajeet will be familiar to Pune techies from their earlier venture, cloud-based software development environment provider BootstrapToday.

Pune’s FirstCry – Baby Products eCommerce Company – to have 100 offline stores

VCCircle has an interesting interview with Supam Maheshwari, CEO of Pune-based baby-products ecommerce company, FirstCry, where he says that they will have 100 offline stores in India by the end of this year

Here are some excerpts from that interview:

You raised $15 million funding from Vertex to take the total external funding to $33 million. How are you using the fresh capital?

The capital is being used mainly to enhance our technology, product and operations. A portion of the money is also being used to open more offline stores in cities across the country. We currently run 70 stores across 58 cities and continue to add four-five stores a month. We will now look to open more stores in Bangalore, Pune, Chennai and Delhi, among others.

By the end of this year, we will have 100 offline stores across the country to beat lifestyle apparels and fashion e-tailer Myntra.com to have the most number of stores from an e-com player in India. By the end of 2017, we aim to have 400 stores across 250 cities.

And:

Are you looking at global markets?

Currently, we are focusing on India. There are millions of babies born every day in India, and their parents plan what products to be bought for their kids even before they are born. This is where we are seeing huge opportunities. Additionally, India is a very complex world, with different states, taxes and varied tastes. Once we become even more sizeable, we will look at overseas markets.

and:

Large e-com players like Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal are innovating on last-mile delivery to acquire more businesses. How are you positioned on that front?

In fact, we do next-day delivery in 10-12 cities free of cost while Amazon and Snapdeal charge a fee for the same. This service is available in certain cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore. We will pan to expand next-day delivery to 12 cities.

Druva, Pune-based backup software startup, gets $25M in Series D Funding

Techcrunch reports that Druva, the Pune-based backup software startup, has just received $25MM In Series D Funding from Sequoia, along with Nexus Venture Partners and Tenaya capital, bringing their total funding to $92MM.

Usually, online backup providers get compared with Dropbox and Box.com and other, famous consumer oriented backup providers, but in keeping with Pune’s tradition of Enterprise Software products, Druva is differentiating itself by focusing on the B2B market:

First of all, they have concentrated strictly on the enterprise market, foregoing the SMB and consumer markets that bring with them the lure of big user numbers, but lower revenue.

Secondly, rather than being strictly a backup tool or sync and share, they have chosen a different route, what he says is more intelligent than simply offering “a data graveyard.” Instead, they look at data protection and governance on mobile devices, working with eDiscovery vendors like Recommind and AccessData to help companies entangled in litigation isolate and remove content involved in the lawsuit from the affected mobile devices with minimum possible disruption to the owner.

And thirdly they can provide mobile device recovery if a device is lost to get a user back up and running  quickly, and they can help IT assess what if any essential data might have been compromised..

and, as a result, they’re playing in a slightly different market than traditional cloud storage/backup providers:

puts them more in competition with traditional backup/governance/eDiscovery vendors like EMC, Symantec and HP than cloud storage vendors like Dropbox and Box. In fact, he says his sales typically involve both legal and IT, so it’s a bit of a different play than pure cloud storage would suggest.

The approach has gotten the attention of customers like NASA, Pfizer, Dell and Hitachi among others, and they have gained 900 customers since their last funding round, growing from 2100 to 3000 enterprise customers in the last 10 months.

SLP is a weekend course for startup founders that runs over 6 months (total of 60-hours). It is a volunteer driven program and the “training” is provided by successful entrepreneurs. SLP does not take any equity from the founder for this course – but they do charge some fees (Rs. 12000 this year) to recover their costs for running the program. The program kicks off in September 2014, with 10 Saturday all day classes.

In all, SLP fellows have founded 700 companies that have raised $370 million from the world’s and include startups like Ixigo, DeliveryChef, NatureBox, SideTour, Micello, Momelan, Novira, Runkeeper, Sharypic, Schooladmissions, Shareaholic, Solar Junction, Voicetap and Ubersense. 10 startups founded by our Fellows have been acquired including Savored (Groupon), TomNod (Digital Globe), Kaptur (Aha Life), Momelan (Kinetic Concepts) and Fondu (airbnb).

Here is the pitch for why you should consider joining SLP from PuneTech’s article about SLP when it was first launched in Pune in 2012.

Startup Leadership Program is a NOT FOR PROFIT entity, registered in US and INDIA. What will entrepreneurs get out of SLP?

Job Mela 2014 for final year Engineering Students by @PuneStartups/@CSIPune

It’s back! The Pune Open Coffee Club and The Computer Society of India, Pune are organizing a job mela for final year engineering students on Saturday, 14th June, at Cummins College Pune, from 9:30am to 4:30pm.

This event is free for students, as well as for startups. Startups who wish to be part of this, please signup here, and read the For Companies section below. Students who wish to be part of this please read the For Students section below.

For Companies

We already have 850+ students signed up, and we expect the number to go up even more by the time of the event. These are engineering students who are interested in jobs with Pune startups.

On 14th June, you will get a chance to give a short pitch about your company to the students, interact with selected students, shortlist the ones you like and interview them right away (or schedule an interview for later). And this is free for you.

So sign up here.

If you’ve been to a previous job or internship mela organized in Pune, you know that handling 1000+ students is a complete mess. Hence this time is a bit different. We are making all students go through an online programming test by ReliScore, and only students who do well in the test will be allowed to attend the event.

In other words, you get only good students, and you will not be inundated with resumes of unemployable students.

What are startups expected to do there?

Get marketing material – lots of it. Visiting cards, leaflets and what not. Get banners – you will have one table of size 3ftx4ft for you. Get a laptop with a running PPT. Your main aim is to attract the best students to your company.

This must be costing a bomb?!

NO! This event is totally FREE of cost. However, prior registration is mandatory.

For Students

Students: You don’t find so many startups in one place, at one time, all accessible to interact with you!

Why work with startups?

Startups are cool. Startups are where the action is. The experience that you would get in a startup in a few months, would be better than what you would get from large corporations in a few years. In startups, you get an exposure to the various moving parts of a company – coding, testing, admin, HR, marketing… you name it! More than all of this, you get to work directly with founders of the company, who will one day make it very big (like Google, Twitter?).

What do startups want from me?

Life at startups can be very exciting – but you need to be prepared to give more than 100%. Many startups work on cutting edge technologies, and there is going to be a huge learning curve for you, to be able for you to meaningfully contribute to the company. So, it requires dedication, patience and a positive attitude.

Ok, as a student, what should I do?

Get in touch with the T&P officer of your college. An online programming test has been arranged for 10th June with participating colleges, and you need to find out the procedure for being part of this event.

If you are a student of a Pune college, and your college is not participating in this event, please ask them to contact CSI Pune (or send mail to punetech@punetech.om and we can forward it to the appropriate people), before 9th June.

If you’re a student from a college that is not participating, or if you’re a student from outside Pune but are willing to work in Pune, and willing to travel to Pune on 14th, then please visit ReliScore.com on 11th June for instructions on how you might be able to get into the event on a wild card entry.

Doo Things Meetup: Papers We love

  • Date: Sat, 7 Jun 10:00am – 1:00pm
  • Location: 402A, Town Square, Above Dorabjees, Airport Road, Viman Nagar, Pune

There is a Paper’s We Love meetup group.

We really like the concept and want to see how it works here in our community.

So, I want to propose we do a meetup around the theme.

Summarized :

What was the last paper within the realm of computing you read and loved? What did it inspire you to build or tinker with? Come share the ideas in an awesome academic/research paper with fellow engineers, programmers, and paper-readers. Lead a session and show off code that you wrote that implements these ideas or just give us the lowdown about the paper (because of HARD MATH!). Otherwise, just come, listen, and discuss.

If you have read a paper and found it really interesting and want share your thoughts on it – welcome!

If nobody comes up with a paper, I will post a link – and we can take it from there.

Does this sound fun?

Pune-based Sci/Math Learning Platform @FunctionSpace get funding from @NexusVP

(Sorry, this news is being posted here a little late; I was on vacation when this news broke, and decided that a late update is better than no update at all.)

Pune-based Function Space, an online “social” platform for learning science and maths has recently raised seed funding from Nexus Venture Partners.

Function Space is trying to make STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education fun and engaging, something that is seriously been missing from our education system

Function Space, already offers a strong community consisting of users from over 190 countries, including students, professors and researchers from MIT, Stanford, University of California, Berkeley and Los Angeles campuses, Indian Institute of Technology campuses, Indian Institute of Science and other prestigious institutions.

The funding will be used for expansion: of their content, their tools, and their customer reach.

Function Space was founded in 2013 by Adit Gupta, Sakshi Majmudar and Sumit Maniyar.

Note, this makes NexusVP the most Pune-friendly venture capital firm with 9 investments in Pune.
