JBoss/Hibernate Guru Emmanuel Bernard in Pune – 21/22 April (Pune JBoss Users Group)

Emmanuel Bernard, a JBoss Guru, and founder/co-founder of all the Hibernate annotations projects is visiting Pune next week. The just-formed Pune JBoss Users Group is planning on arranging an event for Pune’s JBoss/Hibernate developers to interact with Emmanuel. The details have not yet been decided and will be put up on the PuneJBUG mailing list. Or, simply subscribe for PuneTech updates.

About Emmanuel Bernard

Emmanuel is a Lead developer at JBoss, a division of Red Hat. After graduating from Supelec (French “Grande Ecole”), Emmanuel has spent a few years in the retail industry where he started to be involved in the ORM space. He joined the Hibernate team 4 years ago. Emmanuel is the lead developer of Hibernate Annotations and Hibernate EntityManager, two key projects on top of Hibernate core implementing the Java Persistence(tm) specification, as well as Hibernate Search and Validator. Emmanuel is a member of the EJB 3.0 expert group and the spec lead of JSR 303: Bean Validation. He is a regular speaker at various conferences and JUGs, including JavaOne, JBoss World and JavaPolis and the co-author of Hibernate Search in Action from Manning.

Atul Chitnis, has been at the forefront of the software revolution in India since the 80s. He has literally seen this world change multiple times. He will address Pune’s startups on how the world is changing, again, and how to be prepared for this change. This will on Sunday, March 29, 11am to 1pm at Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research (SICSR), Model Colony. (Map)

Atul is very active in the Linux and the FOSS community, he is a successful technology trend watcher, and he is also into mobile, wireless, handheld technologies. He would be happy to address any of these topics based on the interest of the audience.

Atul is the Chief Products Officer at Geodesic (http://geodesic.com). He has been at the forefront of India’s technology evolution since the 1980s, predicting and driving new technology waves such as datacommunication, networking, the Internet, wireless and mobile computing, and Open Source, among others. A hardcore products man, his focus areas include mobile and hand-held computing, wireless data networks, Linux and Open Source and entertainment technologies – topics he frequently writes about. His popular PCQuest column, COMversations, helped bootstrap Indian users into the consumer datacomm era. Atul is well known for his work with the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) community, and is also the founder of FOSS.IN, one of the world’s largest grassroot technology conferences. He is also a member of several Project Review and Steering Committees with the Department of Information technology (DIT), Government of India.

The Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication (SIMC) is organising National Cyber Media Conclave ’09, a media seminar on the 28th of March, in its campus at Lavale. The event will explore various aspects of the cyber medium and its vast potential. A first of its kind initiative by any educational institution, NCMC aims to bring together stalwarts from the cyber world on a common platform where they can address enthusiastic young minds interested in cyber media.

The National Cyber Media Conclave will host two panels of speakers on the potency of cyber media for knowledge sharing, social change and networking; and the emergence of the web as a medium for branding and marketing. This would be followed by a workshop conducted by Mr. Rajesh Lalwani (Founder and CEO, Blogworks.com), and ‘Web Wunderkind’, a contest on the presentation of a business plan for the cyber medium. The winners of the contest would get cash prizes worth Rs. 15,000/-.

9am-10am: Breakfast and Conversation
10am-1pm: A freewheeling, roundtable kind of discussion, loosely structured around the following:

  • Introductions of Seth and Arun. What we do, what we’d like to accomplish during our short stay in India, etc.
  • Introduction to the Mozilla Project (10 – 15 mins.). How we work, tools we use, etc. Brief history + discussion of our open source m.o.
  • Localization. *May* be able to demo Fennec, or mobile Firefox.
  • Extensions. Do the entrepeneurial community think extensions are a good model? Arun will also demo Personas. Essentially, discuss http://addons.mozilla.org/ and potential future directions.
  • Discussion about the Open Web. What do we mean by the Open Web? What tools, libraries, are available? Who supports it? What’s lacking? I’ll give demos of:
    • Libraries such as jquery — very brief, visual demonstrations about what can be done with it.
    • The Bespin IDE. It’s an open source project that we believe will alter how people think about web development 🙂 Essentially, discuss what web developers have been clamoring for, and what we’re doing to try and address that.
    • Discussion of video, and open codecs. Discuss 2D and 3D graphics capabilities that are being introduced into the web platform. Why use technologies like Flash? Why NOT use technologies like Flash?
    • What’s coming down the road? What should the platform be capable of? 3.5. Open discussion. What kinds of applications can be created on top of these tools? And, how can entrepreneurs and web developers help craft this direction?

In this, we present a framework based on model based testing for security vulnerabilities testing. Security vulnerabilities are not only related to security functionalities at the application level but are sensitive to implementation details. Thus traditional model based approaches which remove implementation details are by themselves inadequate for testing security vulnerabilities. We demonstrate a framework that retains the advantages of model based testing that exposes only the necessary details relevant for vulnerability testing.

Our framework has three sub-models: a model or specification of the key aspects of the application, a model about the relevant aspects of the implementation and a model of the attacker. These three models are them combined to generate test cases. The same approach can also be used to test if a system meets a privacy policy.

About the Speaker – Padmanabhan Krishnan

Prof. Krishnan is a Professor at the Centre for Software Assurance, School of IT, Bond University, Australia. He also holds a research associate position at the United Nations University, International Institute for Software Technology. He got his BTech from IIT-Kanpur and MS and PhD from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His interests are in model based testing, verification techniques and practical formal methods for software assurance. He has held positions in the USA, Denmark, New Zealand, Germany and Australia.

This promises to be another action packed Saturday for techies in Pune.

The day kicks off with the OpenSocial Developer Garage conference for – you guessed – developers of the OpenSocial API. With a schedule packed with two tracks of talks from morning to evening, it is the place to be if you are interested in web-2.0, and social networking (both kinds: online and offline).

In the evening, you have to choose between getting words of wisdom from a successful entrepreneur who has already sold 3 companies, or attending a panel discussion on the economic crisis: myth vs. reality. The first is a Pune OpenCoffee Club meeting, at SICSR at 5:30pm and is a talk by Nickhil Jakatdar, CEO of Vuclip.com, a Silicon Valley based mobile video startup, and COEP alumnus. DOs and DONTs for startups from a 4-time entrepreneur – 20 Dec

Pune’s Universities have given the world some of its best minds, and we are fortunate that they take time out of their busy schedules to visit Pune. And when that happens, we must grab that opportunity to learn from their experiences. One such distinguished alumnus of Pune is Nickhil Jakatdar, successful serial entrepreneur. Nickhil has successfully sold 3 startups, and is now on to his 4th one. The Pune OpenCoffee Club has arranged for a talk by Nickhil at 5:30pm on Saturday, 20th December, at SICSR, Model Colony. He will talk about the DOs and DONTs for startups, with anecdotes supporting each one of them based on his vast experience.

Chetan Pungaliya, co-founder of Kaboodle, (and himself a successful entrepreneur), says this about Nickhil:

Nickhil is a great guy to listen to. He is an advisor and friend to startups in the US and India. I personally find Nickhil’s experiences insightful and it is always a pleasure talking to him. He has done talks like these in Berkeley, Stanford, Symbiosis and COEP in the past and people love it. Even though this is last minute, you should definitely try to attend the talk.

Here are some highlights of Nickhil’s background:

  • Nickhil is currently the CEO and Co-founder of mobile video search and delivery startup Vuclip. For details, see TechCrunch Mobile’s interview with Nickhil.
  • Earlier, Nickhil was the President and COO of Praesagus, a MIT incubated start-up that he helped grow to becoming the most widely used design-to-manufacturing modeling software in its class, before its acquisition by Cadence Design Systems. Post-acquisition, Nickhil became Engineering Group Director at Cadence where he ran the entire Manufacturing Modeling Group.
  • Nickhil helped found and served on the board of directors of CommandCAD, an electrical CAD company that was acquired two years after its founding.
  • Nickhil co-founded Timbre Technologies, a semiconductor manufacturing start-up, that won the first-ever Berkeley Business Plan competition, leading to a successful venture-backed financing. Nickhil served as CTO and VP of Marketing and Products as the company grew to become the industry standard in the field of scatterometry, before being acquired by Tokyo Electron Ltd. Nickhil remained at TEL for 3 years as Sr. Director of Technology and Marketing.
  • Nickhil has an M.S. and Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and has been the recipient of many awards from various organizations, including the IEEE Best Paper Award in the area of Transactions in Semiconductor Manufacturing for 2001, the Berkeley Distinguished Pioneer Award, the NSF and MICRO fellowships.
  • Nickhil is a student of COEP, and had won the Most Outstanding Student award when he graduated.
  • Nickhil has been featured in several articles published in the United States and in India.
  • Nickhil has to his credit more than 30 patents and 20 conference papers.
  • Vuclip was earlier known as blueapple.mobi – and that was a bad business decision, and they ended up having to change their name to vuclip.com. Can you guess why?
  • Vuclip went from a few thousand users to over a million users in just a few months, without any advertising. How?
