Barcamp Pune is Back: 27 Sept #BCP8

What is a BarCamp

A BarCamp is an unconference. Basically, it is a crowd-sourced conference; which means that the date, time and theme of the conference are announced but the actual talks and speakers are not decided until the day of the conference itself. On the morning of the conference, a whiteboard is put up with the rooms and speaking slots, and anyone who feels like talking on any topic (that is in line with the theme of the conference) can add their topic and name to any of the open slots.

And then people are encouraged to go to any talk they find interesting, and use the “Law of Two Feet” – i.e. if a talk is not interesting, walk out, and go to the next talk, or start your own informal talk in the corridors.

What this really does is that you get a much more dynamic and diverse conference. The speakers and topics are not the same old ghisa-pita stuff – You discover new topics and new speakers and make new friends. You find enthusiastic and genuinely interested people – not corporate types who attend because their company requires them to attend.

More about Barcamp Pune

BarCamp is happening in Pune after a gap of about 6 years and we are expecting that this time around BarCamp Pune 8 will be more focused on early-stage web and mobile apps. However, the BarCamp is open for a variety of other topics, including healthcare, education, banking, real estate, Social Media, lifestyle, Auto, Aeroplanes, environment, Police, Anti-terrorism, Songs, Movies, Books, etc. Practically anything and everything under the sun (and even beyond) can be discussed in BarCamp.

What Should you expect?

Apart from networking and meeting people from various walks of life in different sectors, a BarCamp is probably the only place where ideas evolve during the course of the event. Nothing is planned in a BarCamp – Every participant has right to talk on the subject they love (and think that others may also like). While this format can be chaotic sometimes, it also opens doors to something you may never have known or been exposed to in an event.

And yes, BMC Software, the place where we are hosting the event have sponsored us with Free Lunch and beverages.

Reliable and Scalable Data Streaming in Multi-Hop Architecture – Sudhir Sangra

The changes in technologies, customer requirements, and visualization and consumption of data demands has led multiple point products to integrate and evolve into a solution. The value of the solution is in the seamless flow of information through multiple product layers and consuming this information in real time. Many times, if the “time to consume” the data to build information is not within the agreed service levels, the data loses its value. Thus, timeliness and reliability are the two most important aspects of multi-layered application integration.

In the IT Management domain, the data collection and the system analytics engines need to go hand-in-hand. The data collectors should feed the analytics serves in real-time, to enable it to build intelligent analysis and to do various sorts of data modelling to help IT Managers have the holistic view of the underlying system resources and let them perform a root cause analysis of any problem proactively. The more granular, and consistent data, the more accurate will be the analytics and capacity estimates.

Sudhir Sangra is the Product Development Architect at BMC, leading data centre performance and availability solution suite. One of the focus area in recent time is fault tolerant, Load balance, real time data management.

Optimization for Large Scale Wi-Fi Mobile Device Tracking & Analytics System – Santosh Kangane

Mobile Device Tracking System handles the movement of 70K+ mobile devices in WiFI network and present valuable insides like, Most famous paths, crowded places on flowers, patterns of device movement in Wi-Fi network, device count on different flowers and Zones.

The case study present optimization around handling heavy write operation and performing analytics on Oracle database. It demonstrate the effective use of Oracle performance monitoring tools like OEM, AWR & ADDM report. How to draw conclusions from reports and co-relate that with Oracle internal functioning to gain maximum benefit.

Rally – Performance benchmarking of openstack – private cloud – Deepak Mane

OpenStack is open-source software which is used for building public or private clouds. Competitors include VMware, vCloud and Amazon Web Services (News – Alert), so steps need to be taken to make OpenStack as popular as possible in the competitive marketplace.

OpenStack has become increasingly important to enterprises of all sizes as its reach extends beyond Web 2.0/SaaS companies, such as Workday, Webex and PayPal. OpenStack is now a major element of both enterprise cloud computing and broader cloud initiatives.

Customers also need to know how well OpenStack performs, but OpenStack is complex with many subsystems and components, which makes it hard for customers or potential customers to predict how “different implementation decisions and changes proposed to OpenStack affect the whole system’s behavior and performance,” according to a statement from Mirantis. On top of this, there are many alternative cloud configurations where OpenStack can be installed and used. Benchmarking becomes very difficult because it’s hard to get results from just parts of OpenStack. What was needed is a way to find benchmarking on the entire OpenStack system, with a predefined cloud configuration, the company explained. The benchmarking tool would also need to come up with complex and reproducible scenarios on actual OpenStack deployments.

In other words, customers basically need to monitor how well of a job OpenStack is doing. So IBM, SoftLayer (News – Alert) (part of IBM) and Mirantis have developed Rally. It’s a benchmarking tool that reports on OpenStack performance.

In this session, we describe the details behind the process, talk about the Rally – Performance benchmarking tool , performance assessment strategies we used. We’ll also share our findings on key scalability and performance bottlenecks, validations approaches, and suggest solutions.Performance benchmarking of Openstack component – nova.

Pune Cocoa Meetup: Understanding Bonjour and Peer-to-Peer networking

  • Date: Sat, 9 Aug 3:00pm – 5:00pm
  • Location: Synerzip (3rd Floor, Revolution Mall, next to City Pride, Kothrud, Pune)

Apple’s Bonjour is a “zero configuration network” (Zeroconf) multicast Domain Naming System (mDNS) protocol used by Apple devices to enable the automatic and easy discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. Bonjour (like other multicast services like Avahi and Microsoft’s UPnP) uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically discover each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers. The elegance of this approach is that it brings simplicity and ease-of- use to the users of network devices and services. Eliminating the need to set up services such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, DNS, and DNS Service Directory, Bonjour enables each device to continuously publish and discover services. By broadcasting Bonjour service messages, printers, servers, and other shared devices can advertise the services they offer. Client devices then monitor Bonjour advertisements and connect to the appropriate servers, as with any other service. The protocol also allows for a device to request services (Service Discovery) on the network as well as respond to incoming requests, which in some cases means a single device can be both a client and a server at the same time. The automatic discovery makes it easy for clients like iPads and Macbooks to easily use a printer using AirPrint or mirror a display to a projector using AirPlay

>@PuneUserGroup event: (Microsoft Technologies) Transforming the Data Center

  • Date: Sat, 2 Aug 10:00am – 5:30pm
  • Location: Sumant Moolgaokar Auditorium, Ground Floor, Wing A, ICC Trade Center, SB Road

In the face of an exploding need for technology that supports the business, we need to transform the datacenter to increase agility and make it easier to deliver resources faster. Today, every area of the business, from marketing to sales to human resources, depends on technology. As a result, the need for IT resources is growing steadily. The move to cloud computing reflects the trend: as business requirements grow, a flexible option for keeping up with that growth is by accessing cloud capacity.

We are all seeing trends that reflect the growth of cloud—the question is: how can IT build a cloud strategy that makes sense? And just as important, how can IT continue to take advantage of the strengths of today’s datacenter while evolving to a new hybrid cloud model? One critical step is upgrading older resources. Now is especially timely for an upgrade as July 14, 2015 marks the end of support date for Windows Server 2003. This provides a wonderful opportunity for you to modernize your infrastructure.

Please join us and learn how latest Microsoft technologies provide great options for reducing cost and complexity, as well as simplifying management. As we mark one year until Windows Server 2003 end of support, we want customers to feel confident that they have a great
path forward. During this event, you’ll learn many features of Cloud and Datacenter management including:

  • Computing with Cloud OS
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Still with Windows Server 2003? Migrate it!
  • Virtualization and Cloud Backup
  • System Center in Datacenter Management

PHP Reboot Meetup: Web Security in PHP

  • Date: Sat, 2 Aug 11:00am – 1:00pm
  • Location: GraciousSoft Office, First Floor, Above Jijamata Sahkari Bank, Karve Nagar Bus Stop

Speaker: Kapil Sharma, Technical Architect at Eastern Enterprise with 10 years experience in Web Development.

Web securities in PHP.

Most important factors for a web application are:

  • Performance
  • Maintainability
  • Scalability
  • Reliability and
  • Security

Among developers, Security is one of the most ignored topics. In this session, we will discuss some of the common security threats for a web application and how we can fix them.

Web Security is technology/language independent topic and most of the session will not use any specific programming language. Thus any web developer is most invited to attend the event. However please note, towards the end, we will use simple PHP examples to demonstrate how can we practically take care of security issues.

About PHP Reboot

Today, web development is completely different from what it was two decades ago. PHP matured and developed many new features during this time. However one of the biggest problem with any old language like PHP is, developers have access to lot of old training material/book and learn things which were good in past but not in present.

Major and only goal of PHP reboot is to share and learn, latest and best offering from PHP. This is continuous learning curve and we are here to do it continuously.

Opportunities in Cleantech (IT/analytics/internet-of-things) – with Infuse Ventures (Cleantech VC)

  • Date: Fri, 18 Jul 5:30pm – 7:30pm
  • Location: 5th Floor, A-Wing, MCCIA, ICC Towers, SB Road

Infuse Ventures, India’s largest early-stage cleantech VC fund, in partnership with MCCIA, TiE-Pune and POCC, would like to invite you for a unique event on Friday, 18 July 2014 at the MCCIA Trade Tower, Pune. The event will focus on the ‘breadth of entrepreneurial opportunities in cleantech’. While we will outline the ever-expanding boundaries of cleantech, we will also specifically focus on ‘the role of IT, data analytics and internet of things (IoT) in cleantech’.

Traditionally, the cleantech sector has been equated with extensive R&D, technology-heavy and project businesses that require huge capital investment. However, things have been changing. In the west, many different businesses have come up in the clean technology space that rely heavily on data capture, data sharing and analytics to enable energy and resource efficiency and promote sustainability in homes and across commercial and industrial set-ups. The importance of data and the ability to learn and act based on it is changing the paradigm of looking at the clean technology space.

We hope this session will throw open a new area of potential growth for entrepreneurs who are already in either the cleantech space or IT, data analytics and IoT space. Additionally, we hope this session will help you take a fresh look at your (or your company’s) current capabilities from a fast-evolving cleantech perspective. We believe that the cleantech opportunity is as immense as the web itself, since it increasingly touches every aspect of how we live, work and play.

At the event, you will also get an opportunity to listen to a few exemplary entrepreneurs who re-purposed or applied their non-cleantech capabilities to the cleantech field.

The event is free and open to everyone. No registration is necessary. The seating is on a first-come-first-seated basis. The Infuse team will be on hand on the following day, 19 July, for 1-on-1 meetings with any current or aspiring cleantech entrepreneurs.

Pune Robotics Meetup: Robots/Raspberry Pi/Arduino Home Projects Demo

  • Location: Robofun, 205, Vision Galleria, Opp G-Mart, Pimple Saudagar

Bring your own Robot or any other project (on Raspberry Pi/ Arduino platforms) you might have developed and share your story with the group!!

This meet-up is for people who have built something interesting at home and are interested in displaying/ demo their product to a smaller audience first before going big for a quick and constructive feedback and share their experience/ knowledge with others who share similar interest.

I believe kids who are pursuing or want to pursue Robotics as their hobby can also benefit from such opportunities and so they are welcome to join too along with heir parents!!

About the Pune Robotics Meetup

This group is about giving a platform to all robotic enthusiasts and jointly find ways to promote this hobby across Pune. We often receive enquiries from parents about how to get their children started in robotics. ‘Does my child have to know a lot about programming in order to engage in robotics?’ ‘My child is only 6 years old. Is it too early for him to start doing robotics?’ The answer to these questions is ‘NO’. In fact, the appeal of robotics lies precisely in the fact that it is a sport for everyone, regardless of experience and age. One can find like-minded people across the world, ranging from young hobbyist in primary school extra-curriculum clubs to professional researchers in NASA robotics research lab. Perhaps, to many children, the world of robotics may seem to be complicated and mysterious. After all, the daily newspaper is filled with breaking discoveries in the world of robotics. Yet, robotics, at fundamental level, can be very simple. Do not hesitate to take your very first step into robotics—for it promises a journey of unending fun and discoveries!

(Paid) : A Front-End Engineering Conference

  • Date: Wed, 9 Jul 9:00am – 1:00pm
  • Location: 5th Floor, A-Wing, MCCIA, ICC Towers, SB Road

Web is very big, beyond the capacity of any one person to comprehend it. Started out as a simple document sharing platform, it rapidly became the communication standard for the world. Static content was replaced by dynamic content. What once were simple websites, are now replaced by complex web applications. Web is not one single technology. It is a mix of hardware, networks, protocols and lots more. However, one aspect of web did not receive the attention as it should have. That one aspect is the User Interface. Other than handful of computer engineers, web is being used by billions of people without having any formal knowledge of computer science. For these users, web is one black box that does things magically. All they have is access to web front-end in the form of websites and web applications. But still, front-end did not get deserved attention. But there were few who gave their energy and efforts to keep the front-end revolution moving. And <web/F> is one such non-sponsored and non-profit effort to keep that revolution going.

What does <web/F> mean?

We focus only on front-end part of web. That is why ‘web-slash-f’ or simply <web/F>. It is our fundamental belief that building a user interface is not as easy as it is general assumed to be. Just like any other software engineering activity, building a better user interface is software engineering process. It needs a discipline, clear thought, future vision and caring attitude towards users. That is why we call it front-end engineering.

And finally it is not about building interfaces, it is about crafting interfaces.

Kumar Bhot: An entrepreneur, a technical leader and an established mentor. An inside-out Front-end Architect and Usability Engineer whose last 17 years are dedicated to crafting Web User Interfaces.

Believe it when you hear him.

TiE Pune Breakfast session – on How start-ups can partner with SAP to transform their customer’s business & achieve breakthrough growth

Building inhouse entails long development cycles, and often the market has moved by the time the product is ready. By partnering with SAP, such companies can not only speed up their Go to market, but also leverage SAP’s brand and leading technologies in Big Data, Mobility, Analytics & Cloud to enter markets and rapidly build transformational solutions for their customers. This session will share some examples of the work SAP’s partners are doing with customers – large & small – across the world, and offer new routes to market for partnering with SAP.

Pune Cocoa Meetup: Understanding Bonjour and Peer-to-Peer networking

  • Date: Sat, 12 Jul 3:00pm – 5:00pm
