Pune Cocoa Meetup: Understanding Bonjour and Peer-to-Peer networking

  • Date: Sat, 9 Aug 3:00pm – 5:00pm
  • Location: Synerzip (3rd Floor, Revolution Mall, next to City Pride, Kothrud, Pune)

Apple’s Bonjour is a “zero configuration network” (Zeroconf) multicast Domain Naming System (mDNS) protocol used by Apple devices to enable the automatic and easy discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. Bonjour (like other multicast services like Avahi and Microsoft’s UPnP) uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically discover each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers. The elegance of this approach is that it brings simplicity and ease-of- use to the users of network devices and services. Eliminating the need to set up services such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, DNS, and DNS Service Directory, Bonjour enables each device to continuously publish and discover services. By broadcasting Bonjour service messages, printers, servers, and other shared devices can advertise the services they offer. Client devices then monitor Bonjour advertisements and connect to the appropriate servers, as with any other service. The protocol also allows for a device to request services (Service Discovery) on the network as well as respond to incoming requests, which in some cases means a single device can be both a client and a server at the same time. The automatic discovery makes it easy for clients like iPads and Macbooks to easily use a printer using AirPrint or mirror a display to a projector using AirPlay

Abstract

During the last 10 years, retrofittable radiography systems have created a revolution in Radiography. These systems that are the thickness of screen films have allowed traditional “Analog rooms” to be converted to “Digital Rooms” easily and seamlessly.

This talk traces the development of the first ever digital radiography system, first developed by Eastman Kodak and now sold by Carestream Health. One of the primary inventors of this system is the Author of this talk.

The evolution of the concept will be discussed. This will be followed by the challenges in the various technologies that were needed to realize the product. These include mechanical challenges, power conversion, the scintillator and detector, automatic exposure detection, and wireless, to name a few. Other challenges include the effect of temperature differences on the image. Image processing and rendering techniques as well as image transmission will be discussed. The challenges of commercializing this technology from the research lab to a commercial system will be detailed. This system has been a trailblazer which has instantiated various companies into selling retrofittable radiography systems. Why you should register to attend Python Conference Pune (Sept 2011) right now

Disclaimer: I am one of the organizers of PyCon India 2011. I’m doing this as a volunteer to further the cause of Python and software development activities in India and Pune. Neither I nor PuneTech gain anything financially from promoting this activity.

PyCon India, the International Python Conference that happens in India every year, will be in Pune this year on September 16-18, 2011. Early Bird Registration – Rs. 300 (includes lunch, 3 days) is open until the end of the week August 15. Register now!

If you need convincing as to why you should attend Pycon, here are some reasons:

  • Raymond Hettinger, one of the top pythonistas in the world is the keynote speaker. Raymond (@raymondh on twitter) is a Python core developer. He is the author of the itertools and set modules and most of the collections modules in the standard library, the peephole optimizer for Python, and dozens of ASPN cookbook recipes. It will literally be many years before you get a chance to hear a technologist of this calibre.
  • Learn Python: This is your chance to learn Python. Start learning Python right now, and by September, you’ll be ready to get maximum value out of the tutorials in the conference (including Twitter/Facebook/Linked-in/Google Data hacking, web scraping, image processing, and functional programming using Python). If you need arguments on why everybody must learn python check here, here and here.
  • Excellent Talks: There are 24 high quality talks, on all kinds of interesting topics including Data Analysis and Business Intelligence, Python-to-Javascript cross-compliation, Telephony apps, Robotics, Web Apps, Python in Biology and Life-Sciences, Cloud Computing, Android, testing, GIS, and much more. There is also one talk on using Python to do your homework.
  • Meet Smart People: Even if you don’t agree that people who choose to work with Python are smarter than most others, you will have to agree that this will be one pretty darn interesting bunch of 500+ developers from all over India and outside. Rs. 300 to get a chance for that kind of networking is nothing.
  • Hire Smart People: If you are having trouble hiring top quality technology talent for your company, you definitely need to be at PyCon, handing out your card, and telling everybody what a cool company you work for. Far better use of your time than going through resumes sent to you by your recruiter.
  • Just Rs. 300: Early Bird Registration closes on 1st15th August, so act now. That’s only Rs. 300 for a high quality conference and it includes lunch and snacks for the 3 days of the conference. That’s right, you’ll be paying less than the cost of the food! And, unlike the other, regular tech events that happen in Pune, this is not a cheapo event – there will be swag – T-shirts and other stuff being given away. Did you realize that PyCon sponsors are paying for the privilege of giving you free stuff?
  • Make PyCon Pune the biggest PyCon: Pune now has a reputation to keep up – whenever any tech event that happens in different cities, invariably, the biggest turn-out is for the Pune instance. PHPCamp with 1000+ registrations and 700+ actual attendance is probably the biggest ever tech unconference/barcamp style event in the country. DocType HTML5 in Pune had far more registrations than other places and the organizers had to close registrations. Recently GizmoMeet had their biggest turnout in Pune. The Python community in Pune is far younger than the Python community in Bangalore, so it will be tough for Pune PyCon to beat the Bangalore PyCon, but we definitely need to give them a at least a tough fight.

What are you waiting for? Register now

(We’d like to mention here that amongst the various sponsors of PyCon (including Google and GitHub), are these cool Pune companies/institutions: Venue sponsor: Symbiosis, Gold: Vayana, Silver: Druva and GSLab)

International Python Conference coming to Pune – Speakers Needed

The third edition of PyCon India, an international conference for all those interested in the Python programming language, is coming to Pune on 16th-18th September 2011. The organizers are looking for speakers for presentations, and trainers for the tutorial tracks of this conference.

If you’ve used python in an interesting domain, if you’ve developed an interesting module, if you’ve used an interesting combination of packages, if you’ve interfaced python to some software package / web service and learned something new, you should submit a proposal.

To get ideas for proposals, you can check out the talks accepted in 2010 and in 2009

Actually, you can also look at the submissions so far for this conference to get ideas.

Tutorials are intended to help python beginners pick up new skills. So if you’ve been using python for a few years, and think there is some particular aspect of python that beginners should pick up, please consider offering a tutorial.

Maybe you can teach how to do scientific computing with python. Or you’re able to teach people how to use NumPy for numerical computing. Or you have some expertise in data analysis. Or use of Pyramid. Or website screen scraping. Or doing search engines using python. Whatever it is, please offer a tutorial. The world needs more python programmers, don’t you think?

Please submit your talk and tutorial proposals here.

And if you know somebody else who works in python, or a company that works in the area of python, please let them know. (And if you would like to sponsor the conference, definitely get in touch.)

Talk Format

The typical length of a talk should be no more than 45 minutes. The presentation style should be concise, to the point with sufficient examples to clarify the discussion to the audience, if needed. After every talk there will be time reserved for questions from the audience (10 minutes). We will be providing a buffer of 5-10 minutes between talks so that the presenters get sufficient time to set-up their talk and attendees can move between the halls.

Tutorial Format

The typical length of the tutorial should be no more than 3 hours. All the classes run in PyCon India are volunteered. If you like to propose a tutorial, The submission of the tutorials also follow the same time lines as the talks.

Important Dates

Proposal submission deadline: July 10, 2011
Proposal acceptance: July 18, 2011
First presentation upload: Aug 15, 2011
Final presentation upload (with changes if any): Aug 31, 2011

What to expect at GNUnify – Pune’s biggest open source conference – 11/12 Feb

GNUnify is possibly India’s biggest open source conference and it is happening in Pune on 11th and 12th February. The schedule (day 1, and day 2) is up and there’s a lot of interesting stuff.

There are workshops, talks, labs, and a wikipedia track. Here are what we believe are the highlights:

  • Workshops: There’s one workshop on efficient numerical computing with Scilab, and another on data visualization with R. Data visualization, data analysis and in general number crunching will be one of the most important activities of all software development in the next 5 years, so this is something that people should take an interest in. For beginners, there’s a two-day workshop on building websites quickly with drupal. And the ‘Beginning with Python’ workshop is another one you should take an interest in because python is a great language to learn and use. (There are also workshops on firewalls, GCC, C+Linux, and LaTeX that you can check out.)

  • Talks: there’s a bunch of talks on security, so anybody interested in this area has a good choice. Understanding Firewalls. Linux Hardening. Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing. For the systems hackers there’s embedded systems design and development, there’s virtual networks various linux utilities, and linux kernel debugging. There’s lots to choose from for people in the application layer too: harnessing the poewr of sms for your web portal, Android native development, data visualization. There are a bunch of talks on mediawiki (the software that runs wikipedia) and Mozilla. And a talk on Haskell – one of the most interesting programming languages that you could learn today.

And remember, many of these talks are not by local Pune people; a lot of the speakers are travelling from outside Pune, and in fact, from outside India for these talks. So, if you miss these talks, you will not get a chance to hear them again for a long time.

And even after that long laundry list of talks that I’ve mentioned, there are a whole lot of other talks, labs, and workshops that I’ve missed out. So take a look at the GNUnify website and register to attend.

This event is free and open for anybody to attend. Please register here

Then it will look deeper into building them using two frameworks, Drupal and Django. This will help those of you who are interested in starting new projects and are not yet familiar with some of the available tools.

Next, a look closer at the different projects you can use to assemble your full stack. These are the underlying components of web applications; the most common configuration is called LAMP: Linux Apache MySQL and PHP. However we’ll also cover alternative web servers, database engines, and scripting languages, notably: nginx, SQLite, and Python.

Finally, get some hands on experience with modular development and middleware to see how web applications can be used in all types of environments. This demonstration will illustrate the power of effective and efficient web application programming and how any environment can benefit.

Seminar: Strengths and weaknesses of various programming languages – 28th March

What: A presentation on the strengths and weaknesses of various programming languages, and how to choose one for your application, by Dhananjay Nene
When: Saturday, March 28th, 4pm
Where: SICSR – Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research – Map
Registration and Fees: This event is free for all. No registration required.

Details:
Confused about whether to use C/C++, or Java for your application? Or unsure of whether to go with Python, or Ruby, or PHP, or one of the many other “new” languages? Are you wondering whether it is worth the trouble to learn a hot new language?

Popularity of programming languages, or the number of jobs being offered for some programming language are not really good indicators by which to make your choice. It’s time to get some data on the fundamental technical differences between the major language groups today. It’s time to get some useful insights on the business implications your choice.

Dhananjay will discuss the relative merits and weaknesses of the major classes of modern programming languages and they reasons why you should choose one over the other for a specific application. He will cover both – technical issues in choosing a language, and business reasons.

This is targeted towards both – developers as well as managers who want to go past the religious debates over programming languages and want to be able to take decisions based on technical/business reasons as opposed to faith.

To get a primer for the material to be covered, check out the article Dhananjay wrote yesterday about how to improve your web based software development and maintenance ROI with dynamic programming languages

About the author – Dhananjay Nene

Dhananjay is a Software Engineer with around 17 years of experience in the field. He is passionate about software engineering, programming, design and architecture. He did his post graduation from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and has been involved in Senior Management positions and has managed team sizes in excess of 120 persons. His tech blog, and twitter stream are a must read for anybody interested in programming languages or development methodologies. Those interested in the person behind the tech can check out his general blog, and personal twitter stream. For more details, check out Dhananjay’s PuneTech wiki profile.
