Joomla Training by JUG Pune – 9th May

If you don’t know about the Joomla User Group Pune (JUG Pune), you’ve not been paying attention. They recently organized the very successful Joomla! Day India.

Now, for those who were always interested in Joomla! but were afraid to ask, JUGPune has organized a short training course introducing beginners to Joomla! The training will cover:

  1. Introduction to a CMS
  2. Key advantages of Joomla
  3. Creating pages and menus in Joomla
  4. Introduction to modules, plugins and components

Unfortunately, the registration page indicates that the registrations are full currently. But don’t let a little thing like a housefull stop you. I’m sure that if you are really interested, and if you pain the organizers enough, they’ll increase the registrations to allow you to register. The place to whine is the JUGPune mailing list, or even on twitter.

And as usual, keep an eye on the PuneTech calendar, because you don’t want to miss all the interesting tech events that happen in pune every week.

Joomla! Day India, will be big. Toby Patterson, a member of the Joomla! Core team development workgroup member (Update: Sorry about misidentifying Toby – Live tweets from the event indicate that his keynote was great), will be giving the keynote speech. Members of the Joomla! bug squad will be there. And they are coming in from outside the country, so if you miss them this time, you are not going to get a chance to interact with them in the next run-of-the-mill barcamp that happens in Pune, or even Bombay/Bangalore. So what’s your excuse for not going? Earlier, due to the costs of having external visitors for this event, the price of entry was Rs. 1000. But thanks to the organizers finding appropriate sponsors, everything, including the prizes worth $1600, the T-shirts, the lunch/snacks and other goodies are FREE! (Update: The T-shirts, snacks and other goodies are NOT FREE. They had to be removed to make the event free. Sorry about the misinformation.)

This will be the second presentation by Emmanuel Bernard, who is visiting Pune currently. The first presentation on “Hibernate Search” will be on Tuesday, 21st April. This one is at the same time, same place, but on Wednesday.

Java Persistence has standardized Object Relational mapping in Java and Java EE and has been hugely adopted. This presentation will introduce you to the new features of Java Persistence 2.0 as most requested by the community and specified by the expert group. These include the new Criteria API, support for collections of simple type and Map support as well as support for Bean Validation.

As we had reported last week, Emmanuel Bernard, JBoss and Hibernate guru, the founder and co-founder of all annotation related projects in Hibernate, is in Pune and the Pune JBoss Users Group has arranged two lectures by Emmanuel for the benefit of the Java community in Pune.

The first of these lectures is on Tuesday, 21st April, and the second is on Wednesday 22nd April. Details of the second talk will be covered in a separate post.

Abstract: Adding search “like Google” to your Java applications

How many times has a customer told you they want to search in their application “like Google“? How many times was the search engine in your application too slow? Hibernate Search brings full-text search
capabilities to a persistent domain model, providing Google-like search capabilities while avoiding the traditional cost and difficulties to set up such solutions.

In this session, you will learn what problems Hibernate Search can solve and you will follow the steps of adding it to a Hibernate based application. You will build your own application specific full-text search engine. We will also explore advance subjects such as clustering and the underlyings of phonetic approximation.

JBoss/Hibernate Guru Emmanuel Bernard in Pune – 21/22 April (Pune JBoss Users Group)

Emmanuel Bernard, a JBoss Guru, and founder/co-founder of all the Hibernate annotations projects is visiting Pune next week. The just-formed Pune JBoss Users Group is planning on arranging an event for Pune’s JBoss/Hibernate developers to interact with Emmanuel. The details have not yet been decided and will be put up on the PuneJBUG mailing list. Or, simply subscribe for PuneTech updates.

About Emmanuel Bernard

Emmanuel is a Lead developer at JBoss, a division of Red Hat. After graduating from Supelec (French “Grande Ecole”), Emmanuel has spent a few years in the retail industry where he started to be involved in the ORM space. He joined the Hibernate team 4 years ago. Emmanuel is the lead developer of Hibernate Annotations and Hibernate EntityManager, two key projects on top of Hibernate core implementing the Java Persistence(tm) specification, as well as Hibernate Search and Validator. Emmanuel is a member of the EJB 3.0 expert group and the spec lead of JSR 303: Bean Validation. He is a regular speaker at various conferences and JUGs, including JavaOne, JBoss World and JavaPolis and the co-author of Hibernate Search in Action from Manning.

PuneFUG (Pune Flex Users Group) is an RIA discussion forum primarily focussing on Adobe Flex and related technologies. This is the place where Pune Adobe developers/designers discuss on user group activities and happenings.

PuneFUG will meet for a general get-together on Thursday evening at SICSR. Raghunath Rao, will speak about latest Adobe technologies and practices. In addition if you have any interesting Flex/Flash application to show the group and get feedback, bring that along.

One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Project comes to Pune – Please join

The One Laptop per Child association develops a low-cost laptop—the “XO Laptop”—to revolutionize how we educate the world’s children. Their mission is “to provide educational opportunities for the world’s poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning.”

Now a bunch of volunteers have banded together to take the OLPC initiative forward in Pune. If you believe in this mission, you should join them. They will have a kickoff meeting on Sunday (1st March 2009) to decide how to take this forward. This would be a good place to find out more about the project and see how you can contribute. You don’t need to be a technical person to contribute.
